The IPL 2026 clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium continues to make headlines, not just for the on-field action but also for a disciplinary incident involving Tim David.

Tim David penalised for umpire dispute

The RCB batter has been penalised by the BCCI for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the match. David has been fined 25 percent of his match fee and handed one demerit point for failing to follow umpire instructions on two separate occasions. The IPL confirmed the decision in an official statement, making it clear that the actions were taken seriously despite being classified as a Level 1 offence.

The controversy began in the 18th over of RCB’s innings when David smashed a powerful six off Hardik Pandya. The force of the shot altered the ball’s shape and, combined with moisture, prompted the umpires to call for a replacement. When a box of used balls was brought out, David picked one up and started examining it closely, rolling it in his hands and checking the seam.

Despite repeated instructions from on-field umpires Virender Sharma and Swaroopanand Kannur to hand over the ball, David continued holding onto it for several seconds. This visibly frustrated the officials and delayed the game momentarily. A similar situation unfolded again in the 20th over, further aggravating the issue.

The IPL later clarified the exact nature of the breach, stating, “The first incident occurred when the umpires changed the ball during the 18th over (17.2) of RCB’s batting innings. He wanted to have a look at the ball and did not hand it over despite being repeatedly asked to do so,” the IPL statement read.

It further added, “The second incident occurred during the 20th over (19.2), when he again did not hand over the ball to the umpires, amounting to a repeated failure to comply with the instructions or directives of the umpires,” the release added.

David admitted to the offence and accepted the punishment handed down by the match referee. As per IPL rules, the demerit point will stay on his record for the next 24 months. While this is only his first offence of the season, repeated breaches could lead to stricter consequences, including suspension.

Hardik Pandya also fined as RCB clinch high-scoring encounter

Tim David was not the only player penalised after the match. MI captain Hardik Pandya was also fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during RCB’s innings, which stretched beyond the allowed time.

The IPL confirmed the sanction, stating, “As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, he has been fined Rs 12 lakh,” the IPL said.

While these disciplinary actions grabbed attention, they somewhat overshadowed what was an entertaining and high-scoring contest. Put in to first, RCB put up a massive total of 240/4, one of the highest scores of IPL 2026 so far. Phil Salt led the charge with a blistering 78, while Virat Kohli added a steady 50. Captain Rajat Patidar contributed a quickfire 53, ensuring RCB maintained control throughout the innings.

David, despite the controversy, also played a valuable role with the bat. He remained unbeaten on 34 off just 16 balls, providing the finishing touches to an already dominant total.

In response, MI fought hard but fell short of the target. Sherfane Rutherford stood out with an impressive unbeaten 71, keeping MI in the contest until the final overs. However, the required rate proved too steep, and MI finished at 222/5, handing RCB an 18-run victory.
