India’s T20I team could be heading towards a significant transition, with reports claiming that current skipper Suryakumar Yadav may be relieved of captaincy duties despite leading the Men in Blue to the ICC T20 World Cup title earlier this year. The reported decision comes just three months after India lifted the trophy on home soil and ahead of the upcoming tours of Ireland and England.

According to reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), in consultation with the national selection committee and team management, is preparing to appoint a new captain for the next T20I cycle. The move is believed to be part of a broader long-term strategy as India begins planning for future ICC events.

World Cup success not enough for Suryakumar Yadav to secure leadership role

Suryakumar took over the T20I captaincy after Rohit Sharma retired from the shortest format following India’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2024. Since then, he has been entrusted with leading a relatively young Indian side through a transitional phase.

Under his leadership, India achieved the ultimate goal by securing their third T20 World Cup title in March 2026. However, reports suggest that the selectors have looked beyond the silverware and assessed the bigger picture, including the batter’s recent performances and long-term future within the side.

A senior BCCI official reportedly indicated that discussions involving the board, selection committee, and head coach Gautam Gambhir resulted in a consensus that the team should move in a different direction regarding leadership.

Batting struggles emerge as a major concern

While Suryakumar’s captaincy record remains impressive, his form with the bat has become an increasing concern. Widely regarded as one of the most destructive T20 batters of his generation, the Mumbai star has struggled to replicate his best performances over the last two years.

The 2026 IPL season further highlighted those difficulties. Representing the Mumbai franchise, Suryakumar managed only 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76. Although he ended the campaign with a fighting half-century against Rajasthan, his overall returns fell well below expectations.

Those numbers have reportedly influenced the selectors’ thinking, especially as India looks to build a squad capable of remaining competitive through the next World Cup cycle. Concerns over consistency and form appear to have outweighed the recent success achieved under his captaincy.
