The high-octane rivalry between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Delhi Capitals (DC) returns to the iconic Chepauk stadium tonight, but with a fresh twist that has fans buzzing. With the IPL 2026 season reaching its critical mid-way point, both camps have made strategic shuffles to their playing XIs to combat the humid Chennai conditions and shifting form. From a highly anticipated return in the CSK middle order to a bold debut for the Capitals, tonight’s team sheets tell a story of tactical gambles and must-win desperation.

Why Vipraj Nigam and Nitish Rana are not playing?

The big talking point from the Delhi Capitals dugout is the absence of Vipraj Nigam and Nitish Rana. While Nigam showed promise earlier in the season, the management opted for the raw pace and “X-factor” of debutant Auqib Nabi Dar, looking to exploit any early movement under the lights. As for Nitish, his recent struggles to find rhythm in the middle overs have forced the Capitals’ hand. By bringing in Ashutosh Sharma (with Sameer Rizvi moving up), DC is clearly pivoting toward a more aggressive, high-strike-rate approach to counter CSK’s disciplined spin attack.

“Our aim will be to restrict them to as low a total as possible and then chase it down. There are two changes. Nabi comes in for Vipraj, and Ashutosh Sharma replaces Nitish Rana,” said DC skipper Axar Patel after winning the toss.

CSK bring Dewald Brevis and Gurjapneet Singh in the side

Chennai Super Kings have bolstered their lineup with two significant inclusions. Dewald Brevis finally returns to the XI after a brief injury layoff, a move that provides much-needed muscle to a middle order that has occasionally stuttered. Alongside him, the inclusion of Gurjapneet Singh adds a fresh dimension to the bowling unit. Known for his ability to hit the deck hard, Gurjapneet is expected to play a crucial role in the powerplay, allowing the likes of Khaleel Ahmed and Noor Ahmad more tactical flexibility during the middle and death overs.

“It’s great to have Brevis back, he’s excited and ready. The middle order looks solid as well. We’ve also brought in Gurjapneet Singh, who has been bowling well recently, in place of Matt Edwards,” said CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.
