In a move that signals both a nod to the growing stature of African cricket and a strategic play for future silverware, Cricket Australia has officially announced a three-match One-Day International (ODI) tour of Zimbabwe scheduled for September 2026. This historic visit marks the first time the Australian men’s senior side will travel to Zimbabwe for a bilateral ODI series in over a decade, with all matches set to be hosted at the iconic Harare Sports Club.

The timing of the tour is far from coincidental. With Zimbabwe slated to co-host the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup alongside South Africa and Namibia, the Australian camp is viewing this series as a critical fact-finding mission. The fast, bouncy tracks of Harare will provide invaluable data for the defending 50-over world champions, who are desperate to avoid a repeat of their recent T20 woes.

Bridging the gap: Zimbabwe’s rise and Australia’s reality check

While Australia have historically dominated the head-to-head records—boasting 29 wins from 33 encounters, the Chevrons have recently shed their underdog skin to become a genuine threat in white-ball cricket. Memories are still fresh of Zimbabwe’s stunning 23-run victory over Australia in the group stages of the 2026 T20 World Cup held earlier this year. That defeat, which contributed to Australia’s premature exit from the tournament, proved that the gap between the traditional powerhouses and rising nations is rapidly closing.

National selector George Bailey highlighted the need for adaptation, noting that while bilateral success has been high, it hasn’t always translated to tournament trophies.

We’ve seen Zimbabwe’s growth firsthand. They were undefeated in their group stage this year for a reason. This tour is about reasserting our white-ball credentials in conditions that will likely mirror what we see at the next World Cup,” Bailey remarked.

Australia’s ODI fixtures confirmed for historic Zimbabwe series in 2026

The three-match stint in Harare is just the beginning of a gruelling African odyssey for the Australians. Immediately following the Zimbabwe series, the squad will fly to South Africa for three ODIs across Durban, Johannesburg, and Potchefstroom, before shifting gears for a high-stakes three-match Test series against the Proteas.

Australia Tour of Zimbabwe 2026 fixtures:

  • First ODI: September 15, Harare Sports Club (9:30 AM local)
  • Second ODI: September 18, Harare Sports Club (9:30 AM local)
  • Third ODI: September 20, Harare Sports Club (9:30 AM local)

For Zimbabwe, the series represents a golden opportunity to test themselves against the best. Coming off a T20 series against India, the hosts are looking to solidify their ‘Super Six’ aspirations for the 2027 showpiece. For Australia, it is a chance to bury the ghosts of their last visit to Harare in 2014, where a shock loss left then-coach Darren Lehmann calling the performance ‘embarrassing.’ This time around, the stakes are much higher than mere pride; it’s about building a blueprint for world dominance on African soil.
