The upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) 2025-26, India’s premier List A tournament, is set to begin on December 24, 2025, and it has become the focal point of discussion regarding the match fitness of two of India’s biggest stars: Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

With both players having stepped away from Tests and T20Is, the BCCI and the national team management have reportedly issued a firm directive: to remain in contention for the Indian ODI team—and potentially the 2027 World Cup—participation in domestic 50-over cricket is mandatory. The response from the two legends, however, is currently split.

Rohit Sharma confirms availability for Mumbai ?

Reports have confirmed that Rohit has informed the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) of his availability for the VHT, which kicks off on December 24. This proactive decision aligns with the BCCI’s directive for players to maintain match fitness in the 50-over format, especially during the small window between India’s ODI series against South Africa and New Zealand. Rohit’s commitment is seen as a strong statement of his focus on the 2027 ODI World Cup cycle.

Virat Kohli’s participation in doubt

In contrast, there is still no clarity on Kohli’s participation. Sources indicate that the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) has not yet received official communication from the star batter, keeping his state team and fans guessing. The selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, have made it clear that the rule is non-negotiable for all players, regardless of stature.
