World No. 1 Test bowler Jasprit Bumrah cemented his legacy in Indian cricket history on Friday (October 10) by achieving a remarkable milestone: he became the first fast bowler from India to play at least 50 matches in all three formats of the game. The ongoing second Test against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi marked Bumrah’s 50th appearance in the longest format, sealing his unique place among India’s elite cricketers.

The multi-format milestone for Jasprit Bumrah during IND vs WI Delhi test

Bumrah is the seventh Indian cricketer overall to reach the exclusive ’50-50-50′ club, joining a list of esteemed all-format players. Previously, this rare feat was only accomplished by six other stalwarts: MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, and KL Rahul. By being the first frontline fast bowler to achieve this, Bumrah highlights his incredible fitness, consistency, and indispensability across all conditions and match types since his debut.

The 31-year-old boasts an impressive overall career tally, having claimed 467 wickets across the three formats. His current match counts stand at 50 Tests(222 wickets), 89 ODIs (149 wickets), and 75 T20Is (96 wickets). Notably, Kohli is the only other Indian player to have played at least 100 matches in all three formats, a testament to the longevity required at the international level.

Record-breaking dominance in Test cricket

Bumrah’s 50th Test appearance comes hot on the heels of several other unique records, particularly regarding his performance on home soil. In the preceding first Test, he became the fastest Indian bowler to claim 50 Test wickets at home, achieving the milestone in a staggering 1,747 balls, significantly quicker than the previous best set by Mohammed Shami (2,267 balls).

In terms of innings taken, Bumrah equalled the record held by Javagal Srinath by reaching 50 home Test wickets in just 24 innings. Furthermore, among the 30 bowlers who have taken 50 or more Test wickets in India, Bumrah stands out with the best bowling average of 17.32, underscoring his phenomenal effectiveness in home conditions. Beyond domestic records, the World No. 1 bowler also holds an incredible global record: he is the only bowler in Test history to have taken over 200 wickets at an average under 20, cementing his status as one of the modern game’s greatest fast bowlers.
