Ahead of the ongoing first ODI between Australia and India at the Optus Stadium in Perth, Indian batting maestro Virat Kohli opened up about his childhood memories of watching cricket played Down Under and how it shaped his ambitions as a cricketer. Kohli also shared experience of watching his childhood heroes perform in Australia and how that inspired him in international arena.

Virat Kohli reflects on early memories of watching cricket in Australia

Speaking to Adam Gilchrist on Fox Cricket, Kohli shared how waking up early in the mornings to watch Test matches from Australia ignited his dream to one day perform in those very conditions that once seemed so challenging and intimidating. His reflections painted a nostalgic picture of a young boy who was deeply inspired by the fierce competitiveness and intensity that defined Australian cricket.

“Growing up watching cricket as a kid, when we used to wake up early in the morning and watch Test cricket in Australia, you’d see the ball flying off the pitch and the opposition in your face. I used to feel like, wow, if I’d be able to step up in these conditions and against this opposition, then it’ll be something that I could be really proud of as a cricketer,” Kohli said.

Kohli on childhood idols and the influence of Indian legends

Kohli further elaborated on how the performances of India’s greats during his childhood years became his biggest source of motivation.  The Delhi-born cricketer mentioned names such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Virender Sehwag, who inspired him to embrace the challenges of playing abroad, especially in Australia.

“And that’s the motivation that was set out for me early on watching all the the greats of of our game uh from either side not just the Indian cricket team. Guys like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, even Virender Sehwag when he came in later, guys like that that I really looked up to,” added Kohli.

Admiration for Australia’s fearless approach

Interestingly, Kohli admitted that he admired the Australian players just as much as his Indian idols. This mindset has been evident throughout Kohli’s career. Known for his fiery competitiveness and relentless passion, Kohli’s approach mirrors the same aggression and self-belief that once inspired him as a young fan. Over time, he has become one of the most successful visiting batters in Australia, earning immense respect from both teammates and rivals.

“The Australian setup as well, how they played their cricket and how they were in your face all the time, trying to be intimidating and take the game on — straight away that was something that really inspired me to come here and try to do the same,” Kohli added further.

A rare duck for Kohli in Perth ODI

However, Kohli’s latest outing in Perth didn’t go as planned. Returning to ODIs after several months, he was dismissed for a duck in the first match of the series — his first-ever ODI duck on Australian soil. Facing Mitchell Starc, Kohli edged a full delivery to backward point, where Cooper Connolly took a stunning diving catch. It was a disappointing moment for the former captain, especially after such heartfelt reflections on his admiration for Australian cricket. Yet, knowing Kohli’s determination, fans can expect him to bounce back stronger in the upcoming matches.
