The 2nd Test in Delhi has seen India assert overwhelming dominance against the West Indies, putting them on the brink of a series sweep. This match, marked by commanding batting and incisive bowling, has largely gone to script for the home team. However, a moment of individual rashness by opener Yashasvi Jaiswal on Day 4 briefly threatened to overshadow their superiority.

IND vs WI: Yashasvi Jaiswal’s reckless second-innings dismissal

Jaiswal’s time at the crease in India’s second innings was short and ended in an instance of avoidable recklessness, cutting short what should have been a simple, confident knock toward a series-clinching win. Chasing a mere 121 runs, the young opener was dismissed for only 8 runs, attempting an ill-judged aerial shot very early in the chase. He came down the pitch to left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican, aiming to loft a full and flatter delivery over the top.

Jaiswal completely misjudged the shot, failing to get under the ball properly, which resulted in a mistimed stroke. The ball stayed a little low off the bat, making it an easy chance for the fielder positioned in the deep. Anderson Phillip, stationed at long-on, comfortably pouched the catch, sending the Indian opener back to the pavilion much to the dismay of the home crowd. Considering the simplicity of the target and the non-threatening match situation, the aggressive choice to go for a big, unnecessary hit was universally regarded as a severe lapse in judgment. Jaiswal’s departure was an unfortunate reminder that a change in mindset is sometimes necessary even when chasing low totals.

India on brink of series sweep despite West Indies fightback in 2nd innings of Delhi Test

The Delhi Test has been dominated by India from the start, following their decision to bat first on a good surface. The hosts capitalized fully on their opportunity, declaring their massive first innings closed at 518/5, a total primarily built on two outstanding individual performances. Openers Jaiswal scored a magnificent 175 runs, which unfortunately ended in a run-out, and his captain, Shubman Gill, played an excellent anchor role to remain unbeaten on 129.

India’s bowlers then took charge, enforcing the follow-on after swiftly dismissing the West Indies for just 248 in their first outing, a performance highlighted by Kuldeep Yadav‘s brilliant 5/82. Despite being forced to bat again, the West Indies displayed great grit and determination in their second innings, led by centurions Campbell (115) and Shai Hope (103), finally being bowled out for a much-improved total of 390. This strong resistance, however, still resulted in setting India a simple target of 121 runs for a comfortable victory. India has since started their chase and, despite the early hiccup of losing Jaiswal, are in a very strong, commanding position. They are overwhelmingly expected to wrap up the remaining runs quickly, securing a decisive 2-0 series sweep.
