England‘s quest to win The Ashes in Australia for the first time since 2010-11 has taken on added significance. After a 15-year drought, England’s recent record in Australia has been dismal, with the team failing to win a Test in the last three Ashes series. However, with Australia’s current vulnerabilities and England’s determination to reclaim the Ashes, the 2025-26 series promises to be one of high drama and intense competition. For David Lloyd, the looming Ashes battle represents a chance for England to break free from their past failures in Australia and achieve a long-awaited victory. The series, which will be a part of the World Test Championship cycle, will feature intense rivalries, and the stakes have never been higher for both teams.

David Lloyd predicts Ashes 2025-26 winner and scoreline

Former England cricketer Lloyd has boldly predicted a 5-0 whitewash for England in the upcoming Ashes series, citing Australia’s current lineup crisis and internal uncertainties. With just four weeks to go before the first Test, Lloyd is convinced that England will have the upper hand due to their solid attacking strength and Australia’s struggles with team selection. Australia’s top order has been in turmoil since their World Test Championship defeat to South Africa, with ongoing concerns over their opening pair, compounded by injuries to key players. Lloyd’s confidence is further fueled by England’s strong attack and their newfound sense of optimism heading into Australian conditions.

‘I hate predictions, I can’t be doing with them. But I’m gonna turn into Glenn McGrath, it’s going to be 5-0 England. I was told that’s never ever been done.’ Why?”, he was asked by Ian Healy. “It’s dead simple. If you come up against a team better than you in their backyard, you will suffer.’ Lloyd said to SENQ Breakfast.

Australia’s line-up crisis and England’s growing confidence

Lloyd’s bold 5-0 prediction comes as Australia faces multiple challenges ahead of the Ashes. Their opening combination has been in disarray since Marnus Labuschagne was dropped following a rough run, and his replacement, 19-year-old Sam Konstas, also struggled during the West Indies tour.

The uncertainty surrounding the openers, coupled with injuries to Pat Cummins, Cam Green, and Beau Webster, has created further instability in the Australian lineup. Lloyd believes this presents a golden opportunity for England, who are entering the series with confidence. With Australia’s top order and injury woes under scrutiny, England’s players feel they have the right conditions and attack to take advantage. The high-stakes matchup between Joe Root and Steve Smith will also be key, with both players set to shape the series’ outcome.

“Our guys right now, there’s a real sense that we can do something here. We’ve come over there and lost before. There is a real thought right now that England have a massive chance to win the ashes in Australia. They feel they have the attack, that Australia are at sixes and sevens with the lineup, who will open, who is 3, does Marnus come back in etc. Then there’s a really great match up between two of the best in the world with Joe Root and Steve Smith. Whoever comes out on top of those two will have a real influence on the series.” the former cricketer added.

Lloyd unfazed by Australia’s selection choices

Lloyd expressed little concern over the Australian selectors’ ongoing search for the right opening combination, citing names like Jake Weatherald, Matt Renshaw, and Sam Konstas as unlikely to trouble England. While there has been much debate over the openers, Lloyd remains unconvinced by the options on the table. “None of the names are going to make England’s whiteboard,” he stated, emphasizing that he’s not worried about the new faces in the Australian squad. He reserved his respect for Australia’s dangerous middle-order pair, Travis Head and Smith, naming them as the real threats that England’s bowlers will have to contend with.

“All the talk seems to be about Konstas. Has he got substance behind him? It’s a big deal to shove a kid in to open. Fair dinkum, if he gets into the side then fair do’s. If I’m England coach and the team, am I worried about them? None of the names are going to up on the whiteboard. I’m not worried about any of those names. Head and Smith are the names that will be on the England whiteboard. They’re dangerous, they are game changers.” Lloyd concluded.
