In a landmark moment for Indian cricket, Mithun Manhas, former Delhi captain and veteran batter, was unanimously elected as the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) during the board’s Annual General Meeting in Mumbai on Sunday, September 28, 2025. Manhas, the 37th president in the board’s history, succeeds Roger Binny and joins Sourav Ganguly and Binny as only the third former cricketer to occupy the BCCI’s most influential position.

The rise of Mithun Manhas

Manhas’s unopposed elevation marks a new chapter for the BCCI. Coming from Jammu and Kashmir, he has long been celebrated for his efforts in grassroots cricket development and his ability to bridge regional representation with mainstream Indian cricket.

On the field, his career was decorated and consistent. Over two decades, he played 157 first-class matches, amassing more than 9,700 runs, appeared in 55 IPL fixtures with 514 runs, and most notably, captained Delhi to the Ranji Trophy title in 2008. Post-retirement, Manhas transitioned into leadership roles, serving as technical head and director for cricket in Jammu & Kashmir and working as a coach with IPL franchises.

New office bearers: Experienced team at the helm

Alongside Manhas, the BCCI announced its new office bearers, all elected unopposed, reflecting a blend of continuity and fresh leadership. The lineup is as follows:

  • President: Mithun Manhas
  • Vice President: Rajeev Shukla (retains his role, ensuring administrative continuity)
  • Secretary: Devajit Saikia (re-elected for a second term)
  • Joint Secretary: Prabhtej Singh Bhatia (former BCCI treasurer)
  • Treasurer: Raghuram Bhat (ex-Karnataka spinner and KSCA president)

Additionally, Jaydev Shah of Saurashtra joins the Apex Council, while the Governing Council has been refreshed with new leadership, signalling organizational reforms and a forward-looking administrative approach.

Soon after assuming charge, Manhas outlined his ambitions:

“It’s an absolute honour to be the president of the world’s finest cricketing board. I assure the cricketing fraternity of India that I will dedicate my abilities, passion, and vision to the development of the sport at all levels.”

His agenda highlights investment in grassroots cricket, systematic talent scouting, and broader regional engagement. This approach resonates with both state associations and fans eager to see deeper pipelines of talent emerge across the country.
