Team India survived a nail-biting encounter against Sri Lanka in Dubai, clinching victory in a Super Over to extend their unbeaten run in the Asia Cup 2025. After both teams posted identical scores of 202/5 in their allotted 20 overs, Arshdeep Singh delivered under pressure, conceding just two runs in the Super Over to seal the win. With the result, the Men in Blue booked their place in the much-anticipated final against Pakistan on September 28.

Injury concerns for Hardik Pandya and Abhishek Sharma ahead of the final

Despite the win, India were left with some injury concerns that could impact their preparation for the summit clash. Hardik Pandya, who opened the bowling for India, bowled just one over before walking off the field. Later in the innings, young all-rounder Abhishek Sharma also had to leave the field after 9.2 overs, while Tilak Varma was seen limping after an awkward attempt to take a catch. These developments raised questions over India’s squad fitness just days before their biggest challenge of the tournament.

Notably, Hardik’s early departure after bowling only six deliveries came as a worrying sight for Indian fans. Known for his ability to deliver in big games, the all-rounder’s presence will be crucial in the final against Pakistan. Abhishek, meanwhile, continued his rich vein of form with the bat, smashing a quickfire 61 off just 31 deliveries. His aggressive knock set the tone for India’s innings, but his absence in the field later raised eyebrows. Interestingly, when the Super Over arrived, it was Shubman Gill and skipper Suryakumar Yadav who walked out to bat for India, with Abhishek not participating in the crucial phase.

Morne Morkel provides fitness update on Hardik and Abhishek

Addressing the situation at the post-match press conference, India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel provided clarity. He explained that Hardik’s condition would be closely monitored overnight and reassessed the following morning before a final decision was made on his availability for the final. In contrast, Abhishek was declared fit, with no major concerns. Morkel emphasized that both players were not dealing with serious injuries but were only troubled by cramps, a common issue in high-intensity games played under humid conditions.

“Hardik, I know we’ll assess sort of tonight and tomorrow morning and we’ll make a call on that. Abhishek is fine. Both of them were just struggling with cramps,” said Morkel.
