Indian opening batsman Rohit Sharma scored his 22nd ODI hundred in the first ODI against Australia in Sydney, but sadly it was not enough to take his side over the line. He slammed 133 in 129 balls and hit 10 fours along with six sixes.
India eventually managed 254/9, falling 35 runs short of their target of 289.
Earlier, Australia made 288/5 after winning the toss and electing to bat on a batting friendly pitch.
When Rohit got-out, India’s score was 221/7, meaning he had done the bulk of the scoring. Along with MS Dhoni (51), Rohit put on 137 runs for the 4th wicket to rescue India from 4/3 after the likes of Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli had fallen cheaply.
Rohit celebrated after becoming a father in style but unfortunately his ‘daddy’ hundred went in vain.
Here’s how Twitter reacted:
Another classy knock from . He rotated the strike rather well and hit the ball as cleanly as anyone in world cricket today.

Marvellous century by Rohit, but in the absence of support from the top order barring Dhoni, this was always going to be a tough target. Credit to Aussies, particularly Richardson, for pulling off an upset

Australia have bowled really good lines. And Jhye Richardson and Behrendorff have been excellent

Really classy century from Rohit Sharma. You can say that about most of his batting but it has been a treat to watch this.
